Toucheng Old Street is the oldest street in Yilan, dating back to the Qing Dynasty. It was once the economic center of Yilan, but it's importance was later replaced. Now it sits as a monument to the past, with few changes as compared to its former glory. It's definitely worth a stop on your trip through Yilan. Before Chinese settlers came, the area around Toucheng was inhabited by the Ketagalan Aboriginal tribe, whose language is now extinct.

The name Toucheng literally means "first town" in Chinese, because it was the first settlement in Yilan, settled in the late 1700s. With the nearby Wushih and Touwei Harbors around the same time, it became the economic focal point of Yilan. However in the late 1800s and early 1900s Wushih Harbor and Touwei Harbor silted in, reducing their function.

With the advent of the Japanese built Yilan railway line in the mid-1900's, as well as constant floods and continually silting of the harbors, Toucheng Old Street quickly lost its importance economically and fell into decay.

The old street has two temples, the major one being Toucheng Qingyuan Temple which dates back to 1796.

In addition to boiling hot spring eggs and soaking your feet, Qingshui Geothermal can also take a warm bath! Like Jiuzhize Hot Spring in Taiping Mountain, it is a sodium bicarbonate spring. The spring water is sapphire blue. It is very enjoyable to enjoy the hot hot spring in the cypress pond while enjoying the mountains and forests at the same time. Although the park is large, it is clearly marked and has a cooking area, a footbath area, and a sales department. The most popular one is the cooking area. In addition to boiling hot spring eggs, you can also boil corn, peanuts, bamboo shoots and other various other foods. It is really awesome to DIY your own bamboo baskets to cook food in the hot spring pool. Fun~

The Lanyang Museum focuses on Toucheng's history and artifacts. If you want to learn about the history of Toucheng, this is the place to visit. It is also a beautiful building, designed in the shape of Cuestas, or slanted rocks that appear commonly along Toucheng's coastline. Before Chinese settlers came, the area around Toucheng was inhabited by the Ketagalan Aboriginal tribe, whose language is now extinct.

The name Toucheng literally means "first town" in Chinese, because it was the first settlement in Yilan, settled in the late 1700s. With the advent of the Japanese built Yilan railway line in the mid-1900's, as well as constant floods and continually silting of the harbors, Toucheng quickly lost its importance economically and fell into decay.

After residents of Turtle Island were relocated to Daxi in Toucheng, Daxi Harbor was expanded and has become one of the largest fishing harbors in the area.

Due to its close proximity to Taipei, Toucheng has become a major tourist area and may be the most popular surfing location in Taiwan.

The eye-catching feature of this site is the 496- step central stairway guarded by two rows of Japanese Maple. Under the sunshine, the maple leaves are painted with bright red resembling a beautiful picture. It is highly recommended that visitors can walk along this stairway to enjoy the experience of walking through a red-leaf tree tunnel. At the end of this stairway, you can immediately walk into the virgin Taiwan Cypress forest to enjoy the aroma of phytoncide.

You don’t have to wait until autumn to watch the Japanese Maple’s leaves turn red here. And in early spring, new sprout will grow into deep purple leaf which will stand till Oct. In winter, the central stairway will become a white forest of ice crystals which is breathtakingly beautiful.

Taipingshan Villa is managed by Yilan Branch, Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency. It used to be the administration center of Taipingshan Forest Farm. This is the place where most of the Recreation Area’s facilities and managing offices are situated.

The villa is built on a slope and its buildings are divided by the central stairway. It is constantly surrounded by clouds and fogs so that it looks much like a small town high above in the sky.

Wai'ao Beach in Toucheng township of Yilan County is one of the most popular surfing destinations in Taiwan. It features a long flat sandy beach and constant waves. It is also a special beach in Taiwan because you have a constant view of another island in the distance, Turtle Island. It is definitely a great beach worth visiting. The name Wai'ao Beach comes from "Wai (meaning outside)" of the "Ao (meaning harbor)," because the beach is just past Wushi Harbor.

The beach has constant waves and many surf shops and showers nearby.

The beach is usually kept pretty clean and there are umbrellas that you can rent.

The sand is a darker color which means it can get hot in the sun.

As to Jancing Historic Trail, it was built on part of the old「Forest Railway- Jancing Line」 and the total length is 0.9 km.

The old「Forest Railway- Jancing Line」is about 5.5 km, it still retains the natural beauty and historical heritages along the railway as decades ago. Nowadays, you will see the railway tracks, wooden log cart and bogies on the trail, which can invoke the memory of old logging business.

A note on the naming choice. Generally speaking I try to use the Hanyu Pinyin system when writing trail names because it makes sense to have some order rather than none, but in this case, the majority of the official materials about the trail produced by Taipingshan National Park refers to it as Jancing Historic Trail, so that’s what I’ll stick with. Having said that, elsewhere (including on signs in the park itself) I have seen it called Jiancing Old Trail, Jianqing Huaigu Trail, and every possible permutation, so pick whichever name you like and use that.

There are three secret areas of bald cypress in Yilan, namely Yuanshan Piaopi Lake, Sanxing Township Annong Creekside and Luodong Sports Park. You can see the beautiful bald pine forest at Tianxin Bridge on the bank of Annong River in Sanxing. The reason why there is a whole row of bald pine trees is because the Sanxing Township Office planted about 200 bald cypress trees here in the 1980s to protect the bank from wind. The pine trees form this 500-meter-long boulevard. During autumn and winter, the green leaves turn red, adding to the exotic atmosphere, and this secret land has earned the reputation of "Yilan's Little Europe" It is recommended that the best viewing time is from December to January every year. Yilan Beihou Temple

The original name of Beihou Temple was "Beihou Temple". It was founded in 1985. It was originally dedicated to Mazu. Later, it was changed to worship Guanyin Bodhisattva and its name was changed.

The clay sculpture Buddha was moved to Beihou Temple in 2006 and housed in a specially built steel structure house. Due to the large temperature difference between hot and cold in the steel Buddhist hall, It was extremely unfavorable for the preservation of antiquities, and believers discovered that cracks were beginning to appear. In 2012, the Buddha statue was listed as an antiquities cultural asset in Yilan. The clay sculpture Buddha is 5 meters high and stands solemnly in Beihou Temple. Behind it is the Jigong Living Buddha, and the courtyard is guarded by a large Guanyin Buddha statue.

No wonder it attracts many pilgrims and tourists to visit, and the quiet and comfortable environment makes people yearn for it and calm their souls.

Linmei Shipan Trail is located in Linmei Village, Jiaoxi, Yilan. It is a low-altitude subtropical valley and canyon terrain. It originally had several sections of slippery undulating creek bed pavement and a 30-meter-long 70-degree rock wall slope. Now it has been renovated into a comfortable A safe walking space, perfect for parents and children.

The name of the Linmei Shipan Trail is a combination of the village "Linmei" where it is located, and the "Shipan" Waterfall, the key landscape of the trail. The old name of Linmei Village is "Linwei", which refers to the last reclaimed mountain village in the Jiaoxi area. The pronunciation of "wei" and "beauty" in Taiwanese are similar, so "Linmei" gradually evolved into "Linmei". This trail is 1.7 kilometers long. It enters from the right and exits from the left. It is arranged in a circle. It is an important water channel for early people's farming and livelihood. It is like a string of emeralds passed down by an old grandmother. It is full of historical traces of the ancestors' roads and the villagers. I have endless nostalgia for my childhood memories.

The terrain of Linmei Village is high and water is inconvenient. Therefore, water is diverted from the Shipan Falls in the upper reaches to the lower reaches to irrigate more than ten hectares of terraced fields in the lower reaches. This Shuizhen Road is the predecessor of the Linmei Shipan Trail. At the rock-jumping section across the stream starting at 400 meters on the trail, and in front of the water hole at 520 meters, you can clearly see the remains of the Shuizhen
and Channel Cave respectively.

In the early days, the Paoma Ancient Road was a route used by ancestors to carry goods or for Japanese troops to patrol and transport supplies. Although today, the ancient road has been renovated and widened, some of the log sleepers and wooden horses used for hauling in the early days are still preserved, allowing modern people to Visiting at a leisurely pace, you can still feel the hurried and tireless pace of our ancestors, and you can even appreciate the hard work of Taiwan's early land reclamation.

Zhongxing Cultural and Creative Park is located in the Wujie (Xuejin District) urban planning area. It was originally the Luodong factory of Zhongxing Paper Factory. The factory was built during the Japanese colonial period (about 1935-1937). In 2001), it ceased operations and later became privatized. Employees raised funds to set up "Xingzhong Paper" to rent the factory building on the north side of the park for continued operations. In the 104th year of the Republic of China (2015), it was announced that it was registered as a historic building in Yilan County as the "Historic Building Complex in the Sijie Factory Area of Zhongxing Paper Factory". The reason for the registration was that the Second Jie Paper Factory was established by Tainan Sugar Co., Ltd. in bagasse papermaking in 10 Showa. In the 12 years (1935-1937), the Luodong factory was built. When it was first established and after World War II, it became the largest paper factory in Taiwan for two times. It witnessed the development of the paper industry in Yilan through the sugar industry. Important historical value; it is one of the most complete examples of preserved industrial systems among the existing Japanese-occupied paper mills in Taiwan.

Fenniaolin is located in a secluded fishing port in Wushihbi. In the past, doves would nestle in the port, which derived its name from the Taiwanese word for dove. Beyond the breakwaters lies a stretch of pebbly beach, and the clear water and tranquil environment there has given rise to Yilan’s renowned Fenniaolin Cove.

"Dudidang Forest" is located directly in front of Yilan Railway Station and is now used as a Baiguoshu Art and Culture Space. Designed by Huang Shengyuan Architects, nine giant steelstructured trees with a height of 14 meters use steel structures to show the natural atmosphere, and also symbolize the Jiuxiong tree, creating a unique image of Yilan's old name - Jiuxiong City. Combined with the landscaping art based on the drawings of the famous picture book master Jimmy, the Jimmy Star Train full of childlike innocence and fantasy and the retro red brick house with fruit trees on the side show a strong artistic atmosphere.

Houdongkeng Waterfall used to go by the name of “Monkey Hole Canal,” because monkeys loved to gather here in the past. It was once listed as one of the eighteen attractions of Yilan.

Although the monkeys have moved elsewhere, there is still no shortage of surprises in this place and it is said that visiting a monkey village during the year of the monkey can bring good luck.

Houdongkeng Waterfall is located in Baiyun Village on the outskirts of Jiaosi Township. The entrance is not very noticeable and it takes a five-minute climb along a mountain path to reach the place, however once you get there, trees and flowers abound and water descends majestically over a long cliff. There is only the sound of the waterfall, without noise from the city, making this place feel like paradise on earth.

There is a climbing route right by the waterfall. A climb along the steps with the rustling sound of the breeze in your ears, relaxes both the mind and the soul. At the end of the route, which is nearly one hundred meters long, you can stand on the top of the waterfall and get an eyeful of the Lanyang Plain. Legend has it that lovers who climb the waterfall route while holding their hands together will be a happy couple, and this lends the Waterfall a romantic atmosphere.
