The Luce Memorial Chapel in Tunghai University, Taichung has a unique shape that has made it the icon of Taichung City. It is the central landmark of Tunghai University, completed in 1962 in honor of Rev. Henry Luce. Now it is one of Taichung City's most popular tourist attractions.

The Luce Memorial Chapel was built in 1962 at Tunghai University (THU), in honor of Rev.

Henry W. Luce. Tunghai University was founded with the ideals of Christianity and holistic education. Not long after the university's founding in 1955, the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia decided that because the university was so far away from central Taichung Dadu Mountain, they needed a church to make it more convenient for students and faculty to worship. The chapel does not belong to a particular denomination but is considered a protestant church.

The Chapel is dedicated to Reverend Henry W. Luce, who was a Presbyterian missionary in China from roughly 1897-1935, and father of Henry Luce, an American magazine magnate who founded Time, Life, Fortune, and Sports Illustrated. Mr. Luce was born in China while is father was a missionary, and later moved to the United States as a young boy. He played a role in creating a good public image of Chiang Kai-shek and Song Mei-ling helping mold American foreign policy toward Taiwan. He helped to sponsor the chapel's construction in honor of his father. The chapel is built on a hexagonal base and has a unique curved reinforced concrete roof, known as a conid structure, and is 19.2 meters tall. The building is also said to be influenced by the Yale University Art Gallery. Originally the building was planned to be made from wood but concrete was later chosen as more durable for Taiwan's environment. The architects were I.M. Pei and Chi-kuan Chen. I.M. Pei designed the glass pyramid at the Louvre in Paris.

Yizhong Street Night Market (一中街夜市) is a more centrally located Taichung night market. This one is Taichung’s hippest night market, so I would compare it to Ximending shopping district in Taipei.

Yizhong Street is known as a shopping street focused on trendy, low-priced trendy in the daytime, and for its many cram schools. The street is named after Taichung First Senior High School (Taichung YiZhong / 臺中一中), which is also found on the street. It is also crammed between the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology and the National Taiwan University of Sport.

In the late afternoon and evening, it bursts to life with night market stalls, which are concentrated on Yizhong Street, starting in the south at Jingwu Road (精武路) across the street from Taichung Park, and stretching north to Jinxin Street (錦新街), plus several alleys leading east and west off from it.

The food stalls at Yizhong Night Market cater to the high school and university students (lucky them!) and the many other youths who flock there to feast, shop for fashionable items, and play night market games. Even though the vibe is trendy, the foods for sale in this market are still mostly traditional.

Some quirky shops here include a branch of the famous poo-themed Taiwanese chain restaurant Modern Toilet on the edge of the night market area. There are also at least two “maid cafés”: (Mao Mao Maid Café, which serves as both a maid and cat café) and (Doki² Maid Cafe).

After dredging and improvements, Liuchuan (Willow River) Canal has immediately become a top attraction in Taichung City. During the day, Liuchuan gives a carefree vibe perfect for family outings as kids can have fun watching koi fish in the clean water. As night falls, Liuchuan turns into a romantic setting as willows and the swan art installation are illuminated with sparkling lights. It is a great place for night photography and a lovely dating place where couples can leisurely stroll along the canal.

Liuchuan Canal is used for water regulation in between low flow and high flow seasons. It is flexible like a sponge capable of absorbing and releasing water.

Liuchuan Canal was once heavily polluted. Water quality has been significantly improved by intercepting upstream flow of Liuchuan Canal to Zhonghua water treatment plant. Pollution has been contained to a mild level. In addition to the newly planted 37 trees on both sides of the riverbank, 38 willows were also rooted to recreate the original setting of Liuchuan. Moreover, a variety of native plants like Chinese fringe tree, Taiwanese rain tree and Himalayan ash enrich Liuchuan’s scenery throughout the yea

If you are travelling solo to Taichung, the second-largest city in Taiwan, then you must visit Taichung Second Market (台中第二市場店) as it is one of the best culinary highlights of the city.

The Second Market dates back to the Japanese Colonial Era, where it was once a gathering place for trading commodities. The marketplace was designed so the buildings surrounded a hexagonal courtyard where goods were distributed.

Today, it is one of the best places to eat in Taichung. But start early, especially if you want to sample some of the best food in Taichung. The food vendors close as soon as they run out of food.

Since it was founded in 2001, millions of tourists have been to Lavender Cottage to see its lovely purple lavenders. On weekends, Valentine’s Day or Christmas Eve, many couples make a special visit to its beautiful garden to enjoy the romantic atmosphere. When the hosts began to get many requests from smitten visitors about holding a wedding at Lavender Cottage, they began to broaden their horizons. The lack of space in the garden, as well as unsuitable facilities made the hosts regret that they were not able to provide the ideal location for the perfect wedding for Taiwanese couples. So they set to work building a new garden especially for weddings. Finally, after many years of work, the hosts finished their 200 million New Taiwan dollar project in 2009.

The result is Moncoeur.

“Mon coeur” in French means “my heart”. The hosts make the heart-felt promise that every visitor can have an unforgettable experience visiting Moncoeur. Besides facilitating weddings, they also dedicate their time to decorating the garden with all sorts of different quirks and cute features.

Wooden doors, flowers, lanterns, brick houses, colorful mailboxes, and chocolate make this a great place for photography, for newlyweds or for sightseers.

The building complex in which the museum will be established was constructed in 1937 during the Japanese rule of Taiwan as a training ground for prison officers to practice judo and kendo. After the handover of Taiwan from Japan to the Republic of China in 1945, the venue was transformed into Taichung Prison.

In 2017, Taichung Mayor Lin Chia-lung proposed to build a comic museum. The Ministry of Culture then chose two sites for the proposed site for the comic museum, which were Empire Sugar Factory Taichung Office and Xinmin Street Railway Warehouses The plan was then halted due to a land ownership dispute. The museum will occupy a total land of more than two hectares. It will consist of 19 Japanese buildings and one planned building.

Flower Home (Flower Dew Leisure Farm) is a tourism and leisure farm founded more than 30 years ago. The founder Chen Ji-neng has been passionate for flowers and plants since he was little. He has also studied Chinese medicine and medicinal herbs. In the early days, he ran a flower business in Taipei and developed creative landscape potted plants. As he loves to eat tangerines, he visited a tangerine orchard in Zhulan and bought it to build a farm. This was the first step in the creation of Flower Home.

In the beginning, the Farm was named “flower way,” symbolizing the owner’s determination to take his own path with flowers. Later, it was renamed “flower dew” because the owner hopes the Farm can moisturize the piece of land like dew in Taiwan. During the mid-phase, the Farm was transformed into a leisure and tourism farm. And in response to the trends of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, Chen Ji-neng not only started to grow herbs but also acquired an aromatherapist’s license by taking advanced studies in the UK. After graduating, he also founded his own aroma research and development group to promote fine processing of flowers and herbs. Now, in Flower Home, visitors can appreciate flowers and herbs as well as join diverse experience activities through food, crafts, health and aromatherapy, herbal product application, etc. so as to deeply understand the infinite beauty of flowers and herbs.

In the vicinity of the train station is the Miya-hara Eye Clinic. Contrary to the name, this is not an eye clinic, but an ice cream, pearl milk tea and pineapple cake specialty store.

The store name originated from a Japanese ophthalmologist Dr. Miya-hara, who established his eye clinic here in1927.

The clinic later became the Health Bureau of Taichung City Government and then became an abandoned building due to disputes over its property ownership.

Eventually, a business group took over the property and revamped the place to become a dessert specialty shop attracting crowds

All the dessert items that you will find in Miya-hara Eye Clinic are delicately made.

The building is divided into several segments, selling ice cream, pearl mtea and various local products.

Perhaps the hottest selling item is their ice cream. There is a whole range of ice cream selections on display. Every flavor imaginable for ice cream from choconte, coffee, fruit, tea and just about any Is there Something interesting worth mentioning is that some of their signature flavors sound very romantic and you wouldn't be able to figure out exactly what the flavor is from its name.

Once you select the flavors for your ice cream bowl, depending on how many scoops of ice cream you get(you can get1-3 scoops per bowl), you also get a number of sides for free, such as cakes, pineapple cakes and more.

We ordered a bowl with one scoop of Oriental Beauty and another bowl with one scoop of Dark Chocolate. With two one-scoop bowls, we get one free side item for each. Their ice cream is very rich without being too sweet.

Perhaps you will notice that everyone is eating while standing around the pedestrian arcade.

Surprisingly, they do not provide seats for the ice cream buyers, and it's customary for buyer. enjoy their ice cream bowls that way!

For those interested in high mountain farm life there are several farms in these mountainous regions that welcome visitors and offer an insight in local rural life. One of the most prominent farms, which can be easily reached from Mt. Hehuan, is Wuling Farm, located about 29 kilometers from Lishan on the Yilan branch of the Central Cross-Island Highway. This farm was established in 1963 to provide employment for retired servicemen. On the more than 700 hectares of land, at an altitude of 1,740-2,100 meters, high-mountain fruits (pears, peaches, apples, etc.) and vegetables (cabbage, spinach, etc.) as well as tea (Qingxin Oolong) are grown. The spectacular scenery of the surrounding mountains, with nice walks to scenic spots like the 50-meter Taoshan Waterfall, creates an oasis of tranquillity. It is hard to tell the best time to visit Wuling Farm, as nearly all year round you will be delighted either by blossoming fruit orchards (spring and early summer ) or the abundance of harvest (summer and autumn). Formosan Salmon, also known as the "Cherry Blossom Hook Salmon", which is unusual in this part of the world, is a very rare variety of fish on the verge of extinction. Formerly a grey, industrial wasteland, Taichung has been bestowed with a series of recently-revitalized places during the last decade or so, rebranding it as a livable city. While most of the citywide transformation was carried out by the local government, a single alley in Taichung’s West District metamorphosed into an open-air museum solely by the resourcefulness of its dwellers, who simply yearned for a sightlier place to be in.

Akin to any large metropolis in Taiwan, Taichung is home to copious alleys which diverge perpendicularly from a larger and wider street. Up until quite recently, Lane 100 of Linsen Rd was just another uninspiring part of a densely packed residential block. However, that all changed when the owner of a motorcycle shop along the lane decided to paint the exterior walls of his business after deeming them exceedingly humdrum.

As an aficionado of manga, the shopkeeper adorned the frontage with a plethora of anime figures. Soon thereafter, the artwork became a pilgrimage site for gawkers, prompting the other nearby businesses to follow suit. With the help of the original muralist and his family members, the entire alleyway was covered by a hodgepodge of Japanese manga characters and internationally-recognized superheroes, aptly earning it the moniker “Painted Animation Lane”.

Among the familiar figures one can find here are Spiderman, Garfield, Street Fighters, the Simpsons, Super Mario, Pikachu and Gundam, to name just a few. Additionally, several stores in the surrounding buildings opted to capitalize on the influx of visitors and now offer anime-themed souvenirs.

Taichung municipal historic site, “Jukuiju Mansion” was built between Shōwa era 5th and 15th years (1930-1940) in Japanese occupation period. The combination of Baroque style and Chinese Sanheyuan style reveals how wealthy of the owner was at that moment. In terms of building materials, it uses a lot of red bricks. The 86 arc rings on the verandah are reserved under the efforts of many relevant units and the current owner. During the reconstruction, “clothes-washing hole” was revealed by accident. It is with deep cultural meaning and has become the model of “revitalizing historical site” repaired under the cooperation between the government and the private sectors.

Minnan architecture combining with western culture creates the exquisite architecture with special features no matter it was at that moment or now. It is also a very popular spot for photo taking favored by wedding dress companies and outdoor shooting providers. Reservation is required at the moment if you want to visit.

Rainbow Village is a brightly colored artistic former military dependents village located in Taichung, Taiwan. It was converted into a tourist destination by one of the former residents in order to save the village from destruction. The unique paintings cover almost the entire village and have become a major spot for tourists and Instagrammers.

The artist behind the work, Huang Yung-Fu (黃永阜), was a KMT soldier who retreated from mainland China with the ROC army. He and his family were relocated to a dependent's village in Taichung, where they stayed permanently. Eventually, after over half a century the village became worn down and developers wanted to tear it down. In order to save his village, Mr. Huang painted the houses starting in about 2008, which caught the attention of local university students who campaigned to save the village.
Mr. Huang died January 23rd, 2024 at the age of 101.

The village is now a popular tourist attraction, attracting more than a million visitors a year.

We use paper everyday. And in our impression, paper can only be used for drawing and writing. But the owner of Carton King does not think it this way. He uses paper in the same way as plastic or wood is used to create dimensional packaging and in Taiwan, he created Carton King – a unique eatery where everything from the furnishings, to the decorations and even the plates are made from corrugated cardboard. The restaurant is a unique establishment, in both aesthetic and design. The interior looks like a blow up version from fairytales. Enter to this lovely garden where many of the park’s attractions are both water and flame retardant and can be toted to safety in case of typhoons.

Almost everything in Carton King is made by corrugated paper, such as ceiling, tables, chairs, lanterns, plates, pen…etc. As we entered the restaurant, I was amazed that everything inside this place is made from cardboard and paper, except for the food and waiters.

Flying Cow Ranch is a recreational farm in Miaoli County that is open for tourists. Activities there include cow milking, pony rides, as well as feeding ducks, goats, and rabbits, making a trip to this farm fun for the whole family.

Flying Cow Ranch was originally created in 1975 by the government, using students that were sent to America to learn the art of raising dairy cows. After they graduated from schools in the US, the government set aside land in Miaoli for a dairy farming model in Taiwan, known as the "Central Taiwan Youth Dairy Farm" (中部青年酪農村). In 1985, it was converted into a recreational farm, and in 1995 it was opened to the public.
